Fishing Equipment
- Sinking Lines
- There is one item of fly-fishing gear that you must bring:
Fly line with a fast-sinking tip. Many of your casts when fishing
wet flies will be made into deep, fast moving water. That is
where you will catch most fish, especially larger fish. This
is not to say that when fishing dry flies you will not catch
large fish, as we catch many big rainbow and browns on surface
flies. However, your odds of catching a large fish are much higher
while fishing wet flies down deep.
Fast-sinking tip lines are made by several companies. Cortland calls theirs “Quick Descent.” It has a 24-foot sinking head followed by a tapered four to six foot floating section, backed up with a small diameter running line. Orvis calls theirs “Depth Charge.” Theirs has a 30-foot fast sinking tip, with a 70-foot small diameter running line. Scientific Angers calls theirs “Wet Tip.”
Whichever one you choose, it needs to be around 250 grain in weight and it needs to sink at a rate from 4—-51/2 inches per second. Of course the fly-line you purchase must correspond to the rod weight you will be using. - Floating Lines
- You will also need a floating line sized to your rod. Bring a dry fly line that you have found best suited to your casting abilities, comfort level and preferences.
- Rods
- We recommend rods ranging from #5 to #7 weights. We use #5 weight, 9 foot rods, for dry flies ands nymphs and #6 or #7 weights, also 9 feet in length, for streamers and wet flies. Each rod should be set up with the appropriate lines specified for that rod length and weight. We also recommend an extra spool for your reel with your floating line on one spool and your sinking line on the other. This allows fast changeovers.
- Flies
- The following chart identifies the flies we recommend that
you bring with you. Our guides will also provide you with some
of the local patterns that we use during specific times of the
season. For fishing at Yan Kee Way Lodge we recommend that you
bring a fly assortment with a distribution comprised of 70% wet
flies, 10% dry, 10% nymphs and 10% midges and terrestrials. Don't
worry about loosing your best bugs. Our guides will be pleased
to tie more flies for you during your stay with us.
